Update: This story has been updated to include an interview with Beatty after the game show aired. Business senior Sarah Beatty will be featured as a contestant on CBS’s Wheel of Fortune Tuesday night at 7 p.m. In an interview with the Daily before the show aired, Beatty said she landed the role after a YouTube video she posted in May 2014 gained attention from the show’s talent search committee. “Literally the next day after I posted the video, they e-mailed me and said hey, we want you to audition,” Beatty said. Beatty said she wanted to audition for the show because she enjoyed watching it as a child with her grandparents.
“It’s basically how I learned how to read,” she said. “I would sit on my grandpa’s knee and call out letters and try to solve the puzzles.” She also said participating in the show was a way for her to honor her grandfather, who passed away in August 2014. Due to the show's rules and regulations, Beatty was not able to disclose the results of the contest prior to the airing of the episode.
In the end, Beatty won the game show, earning a total of $48,350. In an interview with the Daily after the show aired, Beatty said she was surprised when she won. "It was surreal" she said. "Excitement and disbelief kept running through my head."
Beatty said she does not have any definitive plans for using her cash prize, though she is considering traveling to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics.
